The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is one of only a few National Park sites in Wisconsin and includes 12 miles of mainland along with 21 islands (more at https://www.nps.gov/apis/index.htm). You can paddle, sail or boat to these beautiful islands or enjoy the beaches and hiking trails at the mainland locations. Learn about the history and culture of the area along with some tips for enjoying the Park at the Park Service Headquarters in Bayfield where there is a visitor center, gift shop and a small theater where you can watch a video about the islands.
There are a total of 22 islands including Madeline Island, which is not part of the Park and is the only island that has a year ‘round population, a town, and a ferry to transport you back and forth from Bayfield.
