The Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) is currently looking for Special Activities Helpers to assist our team in interpretation, collections, and educational programming and visitor services tasks. Position Summary
The Madeline Island Museum is situated in La Pointe, Wisconsin on picturesque Madeline Island one half block up from the ferry dock. Here, guests explore the history of the largest of the Apostle Islands. People called Madeline Island home for millennia before early European explorers and settlers arrived in the mid 1600s. Celebrating and connecting all these various cultures is our mission. The museum consists of the Capser Center with an auditorium and rotating exhibits that was built to support the original museum which features four historic buildings from the island. Staff work with colleagues primarily indoors to connect guests with the storied past of Madeline Island and one of the richest collections of Wisconsin history.
Interpretation and Collections Programming
Under supervision of the Director conducts formal and informal tours of museum’s exhibits; presents interpretive information to the public on the history of the original log museum and the permanent collections, the exploration and settlement of the Apostle Islands region, and Madeline Island and the town of La Pointe.
Utilizes objects, artifacts, and photographs in the permanent collection to interpret island history for visitors. Assists Director in planning and implementing special events and daily interpretive program.
The Special Activities Helper may recommend books, local museums or archives and other historical research resources to visitors interested in continuing their inquiries into Apostle Islands, Great Lakes or Northern Wisconsin history.Educational Programming
- Under the supervision of the Director, the Special Activities Helper will assist in the development of educational programs or learning aids for school children.
- Assist in developing weekend value-added activities for visitors to the museum.
- Answers visitor questions about the Apostle Islands and regional history, and provides information on points of historical interest to be found on the islands or within the Chequamegon Bay area.
Visitor Services
Take reservations for, sell and collect tickets to, and assist with preparations for programs and special events; and assist in setting up the museum and galleries prior to opening for the season and closing the museum at the conclusion of the season.
Qualifications
- Individual should have previous experience or an active interest in working with the public; public information or retail sales experience is helpful. Must have sound interpersonal communication skills, be personable and enjoy meeting the public.
- Basic knowledge of Apostle Islands and Chequamegon Bay area history, and interest in learning the history of the Madeline Island Historical Museum, its permanent collections, interpretive scope and mission.
- Some knowledge of basic collections care and handling methods; observational and descriptive skills helpful in cataloging objects, or willingness to learn.
- Interest in imparting historical information to the public.
Salary Information and Schedule
Pay range is $14.00- $15.00 per hour. This classification is in schedule and class 18-00. Please note this is a Limited Term Employment position so it does not include paid time off or benefits upon hire.
Schedule will be 5 days a week, at least 2 weekends a month, and will vary every two weeks. This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and limited to 1,039 hours.How to Apply
