QUARRIED BROWNSTONE
Known as “Apostle Brownstone”, this rich, dark rock is responsible for Northern Wisconsin’s remarkable sea caves, cliffs, and rock formations. Soft enough to allow for intricate carving, it was also durable, and its dark color made it a popular building material. Many of the buildings in Washburn, Ashland, Bayfield, Superior, and Duluth, Minnesota are brownstone buildings from the 1800’s!
