Railroad Depot
The Bayview History Committee was formed to save the last remaining railroad depot on the Bayfield peninsula. The depot serviced the unincorporated ‘village’ of Houghton that developed around several brownstone quarries located between Washburn and Bayfield, WI.
In 2020 the depot was moved to Bayview Town Park on the shores of Lake Superior six miles north of Washburn. In addition to the restored depot, the site includes a restored paymaster building moved from near a quarry, a handicapped accessible platform, baggage cart, telegraph, and a section of RR track complete with a ‘speeder’ and push car used to check track. The inside walls sport graffiti signatures of local residents, some more than 100 years old.
Depot open house dates are posted in the information kiosk next to the depot. Even when not open, the historic site is worth a visit to view the outdoor historic artifacts. Storyboards display photos that tell the story of the depot, quarries, railroad, and more.
Each May, 4th grade students from local schools participate in ‘a day at the depot’. Dedicated volunteers teach local history through stories, pictures, and activities. Students use the antique telegraph to learn Morse code and to blow their own whistles as the model train (retractable from the ceiling) approaches roads in the Town of Bayview.
Volunteers are compiling Bayview history via interviews with long time residents and by searching the Washburn Historical Museum’s holdings. They are also using public records for background information on the folks that marked their names on the walls of Houghton Depot between 1905 and 1935. Anyone with a story or information to share is encouraged to contact the Bayview History Committee.
